Imagine your workspace with panoramic views of the Seattle skyline, the rhythmic rise and fall of the Fremont Bridge, or the historic splendor of the University Bridge. Now imagine translating those sights and sounds into a captivating animation. This is the unique opportunity presented by the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS), in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), through the Bridge Artist in Residency (AiR) Program. 

This year, we’re inviting animation artists to immerse themselves in the heart of Seattle’s infrastructure, exploring the city’s iconic bridges through the lens of their creative practice. Two selected artists will receive a $10,000 stipend and dedicated studio space within the Fremont or University Bridge towers. These historic structures, with their breathtaking views and rich histories, provide an unparalleled setting for artistic exploration and innovation. 

The residency encourages artists to delve into the bridges’ stories – their engineering marvels, their cultural and historical significance, their role in connecting communities. Whether you’re drawn to the industrial poetry of the Fremont Bridge or the elegant lines of the University Bridge, your animation project should reflect the unique character of your chosen location.

Animation is the perfect medium for this residency. Its versatility allows for boundless creativity, from the whimsical to the profound. Imagine: 

• Bringing history to life: Animate archival footage, oral histories, or even abstract interpretations to tell the stories of the bridges and their impact on the city.
