Although it was still too early for the wildflower meadow view I had hoped for, I was greeted by early-blooming Avalanche Lilies beside the last patch of snow. With a picturesque patrol cabin nestled below and ‘sailor’s delight’ pink clouds spanning the sky, Mount Rainier looked ever so gracious.” In Anticipation of Summer (2022)

About the Artist
Born in Tokyo, Japan, Katsuyuki Shibata grew up under the influence of his craftsman father. After exploring various forms of art and taking frequent sidetracks during his new life in the Pacific Northwest, he eventually discovered a passion for photography. What began as a simple intrigue in the remote Oregon landscapes has evolved into a love for the Alpine region of the Cascade Range, where he embarks on backpacking treks. Not only did he find beauty and solitude in the wilderness, but reaching the sites from the trailhead on foot also heightened the level of gratification. Katsuyuki strives to be distinctive in his artistic sensibilities, choosing sometimes unconventional subjects without playing the eccentric, while utilizing his unique approach to composition. His biggest reward lies in effectively transmitting the emotions he experienced from the scenes into his imagery, which ultimately makes his work a true reflection of himself. Although Katsuyuki greatly values his cultural identity, he does not make a point of emphasizing his cultural roots; still, one can sense the delicate influence of his Japanese heritage in his art of photography.
