September 12-18 is national Arts in Education Week

Highlighting the essential role of the arts for all students and demonstrating their understanding that the arts are a vital part of a well-balanced, engaging and equitable education, Congress has designated the second week of September as National Arts in Education Week.

On July 26, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution designating the second week of September as “Arts in Education Week.” Authored and introduced by California Representative Jackie Speier (D-CA), this resolution is the first Congressional expression of support celebrating all the disciplines comprising arts education.

The resolution calls attention to the role of the arts in nurturing creativity, imagination, and cross-cultural understanding as part of a well-rounded education. Also highlighted is the critical link between those skills and preparing children to succeed in the 21st century global economy.

Seattle has participated annually in the statewide celebration in May of Arts Education Month, developed by ArtsEd Washington. For more information on the Congressional Arts Education Week resolution and other news for arts education supporters see the latest ArtsEd Washington newsletter.

The City of Seattle and Seattle Public Schools are engaged in a multi-year partnership to support success for our city’s kids by ensuring arts and creative learning are available to all students.  Sign up for updates and opportunities to get involved.
