Vancouver and Seattle: a tale of two arts cities

Last week, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra kicked off its West Coast tour with a concert at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall. The orchestra turned in a performance rather like the Seahawks: an awkward first half followed by a stunning second half, sending Prokofiev far over the moon.

The numbers are all lined up for Seattle Opera’s 2013-14 season. This year marks the opera’s 50th anniversary, as well as its 10th year at McCaw Hall. This year is also the bicentennial of Verdi and Wagner, whose work will be heard in the new season. Speight Jenkins celebrates his 30th year as the Opera’s general director, before retiring in 2014.
