School district adopts elementary music curriculum, seeks community reps

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is gearing up to adopt the first district-wide music curriculum since 1991, and it’s seeking three community representatives to join the adoption committee.

Here’s some exciting news for arts educators and advocates in Seattle: Seattle Public Schools (SPS)  is gearing up to adopt the first district-wide music curriculum since 1991, and it’s seeking three community representatives to join the adoption committee.

The aligned curriculum will bring consistency to music instruction at elementary schools, targeted support for teachers and schools and professional development offerings for teachers.

The district is building a diverse curriculum committee with a variety of skills, knowledge, experience and working styles to help develop its enhanced K-5 general music instruction program. Parents, arts organization representatives and community members with knowledge and/or experience in music instruction are encouraged to apply. Click here to access the committee application and learn more about the music curriculum adoption. Applications are due Jan. 6.

The district’s arts leadership team is heading the development of the new music curriculum. The arts leadership team grew out of the Arts Education Partnership Initiative, a collaborative effort launched in 2008 by the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, Seattle Arts Commission and Seattle Public Schools to increase access to arts education for all Seattle students. The city is seeding the partnership with $100,000 annual allocations matched by the school district.
